Moving Houses

May 29, 2014

This week the International Tennis Hall of Fame moved the c.1856 Congdon House from Haydon Court to a new site on Rhode Island Avenue to make room for their new building. House moving in Newport has been a common practice that dates to the colonial era when timber and money were scarce. The Seventh Day Baptist Meeting House was moved three times and the Clarke Cooke House was moved twice.

In 1956 the Pitts Head Tavern was moved from Marlborough Street in 1965, being moved from Charles Street to Bridge Street.
