The Newport Historical Society’s Archives & Special Collections consists of more than 1,500 linear feet of manuscript materials, including merchants’ records from the 18th to the 20th century, church records for fourteen congregations, log books for dozens of ships, family papers for hundreds of Newporters, an extensive African-American history collection, town and city records, and a unique collection of diaries and journals. The materials encompass the full range of social and cultural diversity that makes Newport County unique.
There are two methods of accessing manuscript and archive collections information on the web:
- Finding Aids: As archival collections are processed and and findings aids are completed, they are posted to this growing list.
- Archives and Manuscript Inventory: While formal processing of NHS manuscripts is underway, you can access basic data about the NHS’ holdings with this spreadsheet. This data is not complete, but does represent a significant index to our collections.
- Resource Guides: Created to facilitate access to resources pertaining to a particular subject or research area, Resource Guides point to primary and secondary resources across collections at the NHS.
