On Saturday August 26, 2017, the Newport Historical Society hosted its largest reenactment to date, the 1777 British Occupation. During this free program, over 75 costumed re-enactors recreated aspects of life during the summer of 1777 in the heart of Newport’s Old Quarter.
The afternoon program opened with a heated argument between two gentlemen who favor the crown, and closed with the capture of General Prescott. Washington Square was brimming with action, and visitors mingled with Newport’s 18th century residents, including an apothecarist, printer, merchants, food sutlers, a boarding house, and tavern owner.
