Found: The Abarno Collection

March 3, 2022

A collection of photographs of largely unidentified Black men, women, and children dating to the late 19th to early 20th century was recently found in the archives of the Newport Historical Society. The photographs were originally uncovered in the attic of 75 Callender Avenue and were donated to the NHS in the 1980s. The full collection can be viewed here.

While some of the portraits were captured in Newport studios, we know very little about the people who were photographed. Who were these individuals? What was the connection between them? Was this collection of photographs assembled over time by a family, or was this a curated collection created by an unknown person?
