While some Newporters resisted British trade regulations and taxation through acts of protest, others remained steadfast supporters of the Crown. Presented by exhibit curator, Dr. Don Johnson, this talk will delve into the political, economic, and social forces that shaped Newport during this pivotal moment in history. As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, this discussion will offer new insights into Newport’s contested past and the people who had to decide: Whose side are you on?
