Religious Toleration –The colonial history of Newport began with English settlers fleeing first their home country and eventually the Massachusetts Bay Colony because of intolerance towards their religious beliefs. Newport became a safe haven for people with marginalized faiths, where the importance of a separate of church and state was emphasized. This walking tour will introduce some of the religious and civic leaders of Newport, and show how the foundation of religious tolerance led to the political power and economic growth of Newport.
This tour lasts approximately 90 mins. The tour departs outside of the Museum of Newport History at the Brick Market, located at the foot of Washington Square, 127 Thames Street, Newport RI. Attendees can look for a sandwich board sign indicating the departure point next to the building.
Tours cost $15 per person, $10 for Newport Historical Society members and active duty military. Tickets must be purchased in advance at NewportHistoryTours.org/.
