History Bytes: Newport High School Graduates

May 21, 2020

Congratulations to the Rogers High School Class of 2020!

Newport celebrated its first class of Newport High School graduates in 1873, when 10 students graduated from a temporary school on Clarke Street. The following year, 100 high school students started at a new building on Church Street, funded through a $100,000 bequest from local merchant William Sanford Rogers (1786-1872). The new Rogers High School remained on Clarke Street until it moved to Broadway in 1905. The school would relocate one more time, when it opened on Wickham Road in 1957: Since then, countless students have received their diplomas.

Commencement may look a little different this year, but the RHS class of 2020 remains part of a tradition of celebration and achievement that stretches back almost 150 years! Congratulations to our recent graduates!
