The Newport Historical Society recently acquired a diary written by Darnan Hubbard Weaver of 34 Rhode Island Avenue. The diary is recorded in a Ward’s “A Line A Day” book, which encourages the user to record short observations for each day of the year and is designed to hold five years’ worth of entries.

Weaver used the diary regularly from 1911 to 1912 and recorded the names of people that she interacted with as well as many of her day-to-day activities. She also made it a habit to record a short description of the weather with each entry.

Interspersed throughout the book are photographs, programs and some pieces of schoolwork that help to further highlight daily life in Newport at the beginning of the 20th century.
