Black leaders in the 18th and 19th centuries organized, spoke out, and advocated strenuously for an end to slavery, along with greater rights and opportunities for their community. While they wrote and lectured eloquently and forcefully, often putting their very lives at risk to do so, their voices and stories have seldom been heard. Abolitionists of the Northeast; Black Leaders of the Antislavery Movement profiles Black leaders from throughout New England and New York who strove to make a difference. The book seeks to ensure the stories of these courageous Black leaders are not lost.
The Edward W. Kane & Martha J. Wallace Center for Black History at the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House will also remain open until 6:30 PM on the evening of the program. Lecture guests are invited to enjoy complimentary admission to the Center that day. For those unable to visit before the lecture begins, a voucher for free admission—valid for a limited time—will be provided upon request.
