Plan Your Visit

The properties and artifacts under the care of the Newport Historical Society can be found in the heart of downtown Newport, just steps from Washington Square. Most experiences are within easy walking distance, making it simple to explore multiple sites and make new discoveries in a single visit.

Before your arrive, we recommend:

  • Checking current hours for each historic site.
  • Purchasing tickets in advance when possible.
  • Allowing extra time during peak season of May-September.

 

While tickets for multiple sites are available, we recommend purchasing admission for one location online and then upgrading in person to receive a special discounted combo rate for additional sites.

 

  • Colony House

    The Colony House is at the heart of Rhode Island – and American – history. Built in 1739, it served as the seat of colonial government and played a central role in Newport’s leadership in the Revolution, including serving as the site of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Rhode Island. Today, visitors can explore the building at their own pace through a self-guided experience featuring QR-code interpretation, including a version specifically for kids!

  • The Edward W. Kane and Martha J. Wallace Center for Black History

    Located within the centuries-old Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House, the Edward W. Kane and Martha J. Wallace Center for Black History was developed in deep partnership with the Black community and is a shared space for reflection, learning, and connection.   With rotating exhibitions, dynamic programs, ongoing research, and special events — hosted not just by t

    he Historical Society but with and by our community partners — the Center continues to evolve, giving visitors a reason to come back time and again.

  • Occupied! Newport and the Fight for Independence

    During the Revolutionary War, Newport changed hands more than any other major seaport in North America. Occupied! Newport and the Fight for Independence explores the dramatic years in which Continental, British, and French forces successively occupied the city, transforming Newport and the lives of the people who called it home.
    Through artifacts, stories, and interpretation, the interactive exhibition traces Newport’s journey from a thriving colonial port to a community reshaped by war, hardship, occupation, and revolution. Visitors will discover how military occupation affected everyday life, divided loyalties, destroyed property and resources, and forever altered the city’s future.

    Occupied! is on view through the end of 2026 at the Newport Historical Society’s Richard I. Burnham Resource Center.

    Open Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–3:00 PM.

  • Walking Tours

    Explore five centuries of stories with Newport History Tours, the Newport Historical Society’s award-winning walking tour program. Led by experienced and knowledgeable guides, these tours offer an engaging and educational experience that uncovers every chapter of Newport history.

    Tours depart regularly from the Colony House in Washington Square and cover a wide variety of topics. Tailored private and group tours are also available.
