In 1777 as the Revolutionary War officially began, 7,000 British and Hessian soldiers invaded Newport creating an occupation that lasted for nearly 3 years. Join an expert tour guide wearing an authentic 18th century British military uniform and explore the sites and stories of the soldiers and citizens affected during this time.

Tours depart from the Colony House, located at the top of Washington Square, and cost $15 per person, $10 for Newport Historical Society members and active duty military. Tickets must be purchased in advance online at NewportHistoryTours.com, cash payments are not accepted. Visitors are required to wear a face mask and follow social distancing guidelines of staying 6 feet apart from anyone not part of their “quaranteam.” Additionally, visitors will be screened for illness to ensure the health of everyone in the tour group. Tours are limited to 6 visitors. For more details visit NewportHistoryTours.org or call the Museum of Newport History & Shop at 401-841-8770.

Additionally the Society is pleased to offer a series of pop-up living history programs on each Saturday in October. These programs, which run 10am-2pm inside the Colony House, will feature an aspect of life in 18th century Newport presented by a living historian in reproduction historical clothing. The rotating themes will be announced on social media the week before each program, follow the NHS on Facebook and Instagram (@NewportHistory) for the latest updates; programs are subject to change or being canceled at the last minute. Admission is free, donations are welcome.
