Between World War One and the Great Depression, St. George’s School experienced a period of prosperity and growth. Capital campaigns were underway for war memorials and school buildings when, in 1922, the anonymous gift of a new school chapel was announced. The donor was quickly identified as John Nicholas Brown, class of 1918 and just out of Harvard at the age of 22. Ground was broken in 1924 and architect Ralph Adams Cram’s gothic “Cathedral on the Hill” was dedicated four years later. Cram also designed other Brown family projects such as Harbour Court and Emmanuel Church.
St. George’s School is the location of the Society’s annual fundraiser, The Newport Antiques Show.
