Middletown, on Aquidneck Island, founded in 1743, is one of Rhode Island’s earliest settlements and is rich in history and natural beauty. The town is the subject of the new book Images of America: Middletown by Dr. Christine Haverington from the Middletown Historical Society. The Newport Historical Society and the Middletown Historical Society have partnered for the book’s debut to offer a lecture with the author.

Dr. Haverington will discuss Middletown’s history as it is featured in the book. She will share details about the town’s founding, the farmers who helped shape the town’s history and the inspirational local scenery. She will discuss the central role Middletown has played in the development of America’s politics, culture, military history and economic development.

A Middletown resident, Dr. Haverington is a Board Member of the Middletown Historical Society. She earned a BA in English from Williams College and a PhD in English literature from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has published a long list of academic books and articles.
