July 2010 022On Saturday November 13th at 2pm, at the Newport Historical Society headquarters (82 Touro Street) in the restored Seventh Day Baptist Meeting House, hear about the origins of today’s formal men’s clothing in the early 19th century during a gallery talk from Dressing Manifest Destiny’s guest curator Matthew Keagle.

Using specific examples from the Newport Historical Society’s collections, Keagle will discuss the history of men’s dress starting with the late 18th century, how it changed in the early 19th century and ultimately how formalwear transitioned to reflect a version of the dress pants and suits that are worn today. Admission costs $5 per person, $1 for Newport Historical Society members.
