The British Parliament passed the tax commonly known as the “Stamp Act” in the spring of 1765. While both the Rhode Island colonial legislature and governor were opposed to the new tax, a contingent of Newport residents actively supported the Stamp Act. On Thursday January 4, 2024 at 6:30pm the Newport Historical Society will host scholar Abbey Chandler for the talk The Stamp Act Crisis in Rhode Island. By highlighting Rhode Island’s response to the Stamp Act crisis, Dr. Chandler will share a broader story about political connections and divisions in British North America on the eve of the American Revolution.

Abby Chandler is Associate Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her research focuses on political and legal movements in eighteenth-century British North America. Her second book, “Seized with the Temper of the Times”: Identity and Rebellion in Pre-Revolutionary America, was published by Westholme in 2023.

This program takes place at the NHS Resource Center, 82 Touro Street, Newport, RI. Admission costs $20 per person, $15 Newport Historical Society members along with active-duty military. A combo admission ticket plus the book costs $55, or $43 for NHS members. The talk starts at 6:30pm; doors open at 5:30pm for a cocktail reception and book signing.
