Rare late 18th/early 19th century apparel

Through November 29, 2009

The Newport Historical Society proudly presents a rare glimpse into its extensive textiles collection with the exhibit Homespun to High Fashion in the newly restored Seventh Day Baptist Meeting House.

Homespun to High Fashion focuses on rare examples of late eighteenth and early nineteenth century apparel displayed in a newly restored 18th century interior. Colorful, fancy dresses and plainer Quaker wear will be displayed, reflecting the religious diversity of colonial Newport. The Historical Society’s collection is unusually broad, including a remarkable number of unaltered high fashion gowns of the 18th century, and a full range of colonial undergarments. Much of the collection has never been exhibited.

Due to the delicate nature of antique fabrics, Homespun to High Fashion will be on display for only five months through the end of 2009. This exhibit is open to the public starting August 14th on Fridays from 10am to 2pm, Saturdays from 10am to12pm and by appointment. Newport Historical Society Headquarters. The cost of admission is $5.
